Adolescent Medicine

We often refer to our children age 12 - 21 as young adults, but medically speaking Adolescents are not little adults and they are not big children either.

The specialty of adolescent medicine addresses the unique health care needs of children entering their teen years through adulthood. It is important that your child’s Physician understand the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that adolescents undergo during these years as well as the disease processes that occur during adolescence.

Very few pediatricians have committed to the additional 3 years of study required to become board certified to specialize in adolescent medicine. Dr. Lore Nelson with the University of Kansas Physicians Pediatric department is one of the few.
