Unit 55, the Pediatric Inpatient Unit

Some of the patients seen by KU Pediatrics.

Good care begins with great staff...

A hospital can be a frightening and overwhelming place. KU Pediatrics is proud of the staff we have brought together. These professionals pool their expertise for the benefit of the children we serve. We would like to highlight just a few of these individuals.

  1. At the heart of our inpatient service are the nurses who provide care, support and comfort to the children and their families. We have an outstanding group of nurses, some with over 20 years of pediatric experience. Given the special needs of all children, this type of nursing expertise is crucial for appropriate care of our patients.
  2. Your child's care will be directed and coordinated by a board-certified pediatrician with extensive experience in managing the care of hospitalized infants, children and adolescents.
  3. Numerous pediatric subspecialists are available to consult on complicated patients who need specialty care.
  4. A pediatric resident physician is present on the inpatient unit 24 hours a day.
  5. We have a child-life specialist on the inpatient unit who strives to make the hospital experience as pleasant as is possible for children and their families.
  6. We have a school teacher who is available to help coordinate the educational process for children who are admitted for a lengthy stay.
  7. There is a social worker and a discharge planner who work with the physicians and nurses to address any special needs and to plan for a successful discharge to home.

The safety of your child is always foremost in our minds

The inpatient pediatric unit is a "locked" secure unit. Only people with specific clearance are allowed on Unit 55.

All this presented in a pleasant environment.

Our recently-renovated unit features several amenities to make the stay more pleasant for you and your child.

  1. We have a play/computer room with many fun and educational toys that help children have a more pleasant experience while in the hospital.
  2. There is a family room located adjacent to the inpatient unit. It is designed as a space to allow parents and other family members to relax for a while. Services include a shower, a kitchen and a TV room.
