Recipient of the 2001 Rainbow Award. This award is presented annually to the one faculty member at the University of Kansas School of Medicine whom students have deemed an outstanding role model. Rebecca Feagle-Orr, fourth-year medical student, nominated Smith. In her nomination letter, Feagle-Orr said she had been inspired by Smith's "faith in the strength of the human spirit," and she told a story of Smith's treatment of a boy dying with leukemia. Dr. Smith was selected from ten nominees in six specialties.
