Work Experience:

  • December 2003-present, Assistant Research Director, KU Center for TeleMedicine and TeleHealth. Coordinate research around Health and Technology Outreach department initiatives including telemedicine services, distance education, and student opportunities for rural training. Supervise research implementation at all stages. Submit grants to local and federal agencies to expand services and research. Promote telemedicine services in community and national forums. Principal Investigator on 2003-2005 Robert Wood Johnson grant and an evaluator on 2003-2006 HRSA grant.
  • August 2000-August 2001, Program Manager, Healthy Steps over Telemedicine, KU Center for TeleMedicine and TeleHealth. The local project links early childhood development specialists with adolescent parents at urban high schools using videoconferencing. Duties: Served as a liaison between the Healthy Steps specialists, the families, and the school facilitators from project design through classroom implementation. Assisted with research design and interpretation.
  • August 1999-August 2000, TeleKidcare® Project Coordinator and Research Associate, KU Center for TeleMedicine and TeleHealth. TeleKidcare® links school nurse’s offices with KU Medical Center using PC-based two-way audio and visual telemedicine units with stethoscope and otoscope capabilities. Duties: Lead collaboration among the telemedicine department; the clinical departments of Pediatrics, Child Psychiatry, and Family Medicine; and the school district. Assisted with research initiatives.
  • August 1996-May 1997, University of Kansas Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Coordinator, Emily Taylor Women’s Resource Center, Lawrence. Gave interactive prevention presentations to many campus living groups and organizations. Supervised peer educators in the sexual assault prevention program. Provided crisis counseling and referrals for assault survivors and their loved ones.

  • Development of an eHealth Provider-Patient Communication Measure, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This study will validate the Roter Interaction Assessment System of provider-patient communiction for the telehealth context. Role: PI, 2003-2005.
  • TeleKidcare®: Teaching Tool for Cultural Competence, Aetna Foundation Regional Community Health. Role: PI, 2004-2005.
  • Kansas Comprehensive Geriatric Education Program, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professionals. This project will evaluate a train-the-trainer model of geriatric education utilizing distance learning technology. Role: Evaluator, 2003-2005.
  • A feasibility study of diagnostic efficacy in a child telepsychiatry clinic, KUMC Research Institute. This project will assess the reliability of diagnoses reached by two child psychiatrists. Each participant is randomized to double interviews, one over interactive televideo and one face-to-face. Role: Researcher. PI: Sharon Cain, M.D., 2004-2005.
  • TeleHealth for Kansans, Health Resources and Services Administration, Office for the Advancement of Telehealth. This project will evaluate a train-the-trainer model of geriatric education utilizing distance learning technology. Role: Evaluator and Provider, 2003-2006.
  • Healthy Steps over Telemedicine, Prime Health Foundation and Wyandotte Health Foundation. This initiative implemented Healthy Steps educational services for teen parents using school-based telehealth. Role: Program Manager and Researcher, 2000-2001.
  • TeleKidcare: Bringing Health Care into Schools, Telecommunications Information and Infrastructure Assistance Program (TIIAP), US Department of Commerce.
