KU Men's Basketball Coach visits Peds Unit

The KU Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self made a visit to the University of Kansas Medical Center in early May.
Coach Self presented to more than 200 audience members as part of the Campus-Wide Leadership Series, while he was here he thought it would be nice to drop by to visit some of the patients on the Pediatric Unit.
Kris Brees, RN, Nurse Manager for the Pediatric Unit had this to say. "It was great to have Coach Self visit our patients and it is obvious by the way he was interacting with them that he really connects to kids. He sat down and pulled his chair up to the bedside and had a chat with them. It was fun and refreshing. He said that he would try to come back and I hope that he does."
He may not have had much time when he was here - but he certainly had enough time to make an impression on all those that met him. Here is what Kirsten Evans, MD, had to say about him; “What impressed me most about Coach Self was his concern for the children he met on the Pediatric Unit. He asked questions about each child's illness, prognosis, and quality of life, and he was genuinely concerned about their future. I thought he showed tremendous empathy.”

PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY
Updated guidelines for SBE prevention:
The guidelines for prescribing antibiotics for the prevention of bacterial endocarditis were revised in April 2007. There are significantly fewer indications for prophylaxis listed on the updated guidelines.
“Antibiotics are recommended only for patients with cardiac conditions associated with the highest risk of adverse outcomes from endocarditis, including:
-Unrepaired cyanotic congenital heart disease, including those with palliative shunts and conduits
-Completely repaired congenital heart disease with prosthetic material or device, whether placed by surgery or catheter intervention, during the first six months after the procedure*
-Repaired congenital heart disease with residual defects at the site or adjacent to the site of a prosthetic patch or prosthetic device (which inhibit endothelialization)
*Prophylaxis is recommended because endothelialization of prosthetic material occurs within six months after the procedure.”
There are also other changes regarding GI, GU and types of dental procedures. The new guidelines are available through the American Heart Association and on their website at www.americanheart.org. If questions remain after reviewing the guidelines please contact our office at (913) 588-6311.
International Adoption Services at KU Pediatrics
In 2004, over 22,000 children were adopted from overseas and numbers continue to rise. As more American families welcome children from around the world into their homes, services available to adoptive parents have expanded greatly. The path to international adoption remains challenging for many prospective parents as they face cultural, bureaucratic, and health obstacles in completing their act of love.
The University of Kansas Medical Center International Adoption Clinic can calm health care concerns prior to and following international adoption in order to ensure a healthy and productive transition for your child into his/her new home.
Clinic Services
The adoption clinic will offer pre-adoption screenings and post-adoption medical evaluations.
Pre-Adoption Screenings and Travel Preparation
Within agency-provided timelines, clinic pediatricians will review health materials provided by the adoption agency to advise you on potential health complications.
Post-Adoption Medical Evaluation
A clinic provider will assess the health and development of your adopted child. The appointment will include:
