Biographical Sketch

Sue-Min Lai, Ph.D., MS, MBA is Director of the Kansas Cancer Registry and Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Lai received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a Master degree in Statistics from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and a M.B.A. in Accounting from Miami University, Oxford Ohio. As a faculty member in Preventive Medicine she is responsible for a myriad of duties including: teaching graduate studies and health professionals, Director of the Kansas Cancer Registry, epidemiological research in chronic disease, consultant to community health departments, and administrative duties working with state officials.

Current Research Funding: Dr. Lai is the Director and Principal Investigator on the Kansas Cancer Registry, a 2.5 million dollar CDC and KDHE funded program which registers all types of invasive neoplasms and some in-situ cancers, monitors cancer surveillance, and conducts cancer cluster investigations. She is Core-leader of the Research Resource Core Stroke Registry and Recruitment Core for the Kansas Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, an NIH funded program studying recovery from disabling events, especially in stroke. Dr. Lai is also involved as a Co-PI and a co-investigator respectively, in two stroke studies "Characterizing Measures of Stroke Outcomes" and "Development of a stroke specific measure".

Service: Dr. Lai is the Director of Kansas Cancer Registry which is a Kansas state-wide cancer registry including cancer reporting from 134 hospitals in the state of Kansas. She also directs a staff of fourteen employees and provides oversight of the operation, monitoring and surveillance activities of the Registry. Since 1996 Dr. Lai has served on the Editorial Board of Neuroepidemiology as well as being an adjunct associate professor at Drew University Los Angeles, California.

Previous Positions: Prior to coming to the University of Kansas, Dr. Lai had oversight responsibility for the NIH funded Lehigh Valley Stroke Project which has led to more than 15 peer-reviewed publications in stroke research. She also was a Senior Statistician at the University of Pittsburgh, Medical College of Pennsylvania, and Hahnemann University Hospital where she was involved in research in cardiac diseases, stroke, and cancer. Her research led to improvements in coronary interventional devices, a better understanding of risk factors associated with stroke, and improved outcomes in patients with skin cancer.

Primary Research Interests: Dr. Lai provides leadership in chronic disease epidemiology specifically population-based Neuroepidemiology research related to stroke and population-based registries.

Publications: Dr. Lai has published her work in Stroke, Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Neuroepidemiology, The Lancet, Cancer, and the Journal of Clinical Pathology. Also, she is the author of the Kansas Cancer Registry Annual Report to The Governor for The State of Kansas.
