What is the Kansas Cancer
Registry? |
| The Kansas
Cancer Registry (KCR) is the only population-based source of information on
cancer incidence in the State of Kansas. Since 1968, the Kansas Cancer
Registry has collected nearly 350,000 cancer records. Cancer Registries
exist or are being developed in nearly all fifty states. |
|
What is the purpose of the
Kansas City Registry? |
| The
Kansas Cancer Registry provides information on the occurrence of cancer,
stage at diagnosis and survival, and sub-populations affected by different
types of cancer. Registry information can be used by researchers to evaluate
the effectiveness of new treatments and by public health professionals to
implement and monitor prevention efforts (e.g. early detection). |
|
How is the information
collected? |
| The
Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has designated Kansas
Cancer Registry (KCR) to collect cancer case reports of the Kansans
diagnosed with cancer. Per Kansas Statute 65-1, 168-174 and Kansas
Administrative Regulation 28-70-1 through 28-70-3, cancer is a reportable
disease in Kansas. The reporting person or institution shall have immunity
from any liability, civil or criminal. Kansas residents who are diagnosed
or treated with cancer in other states such as Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado,
Oklahoma, Texas and Washington state are also registered in the KCR database
through data exchange. |
|
What type of information is
collected? |
|
The KCR collects information on:
-
Demographics: patient’s name, sex, race
marital status, place of birth, occupation, and date of birth;
-
Clinical information: dates of diagnosis, type
of cancer, and stage at diagnosis;
-
Vital Status

What is the quality of the
Cancer Registry Data? |
| The
information contained in the registry is accurate. Currently, the Cancer
Registry identifies approximately 95% of the expected cases within 24 months
of the close of the diagnosis year but this varies within geographic areas.
Various quality improvement programs have been implemented to enhance the
completeness and timeliness of case reporting and data quality. Education
and training programs for hospitals are provided on a regular basis to
ensure quality of data collection. |

Who is able to use the
information collected? |

Is the information collected
confidential? |
| Personal identifiers are
protected by K.S.A. 65-102b and may not be disclosed except as provided in
the Statute. |
|
Future Plans! |
|
The
Cancer Registry will continue to produce an annual report which includes
age-specific and age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates for all cancers
in Kansas as well as some site-specific cancers. The Cancer Registry has
recently increased its financial resources through successful completion for
federal grants as well as Kansas State Funds. Improvements in data
collection and analysis are already apparent. By providing quality
scientific cancer information through a well established Cancer Registry,
illness and death due to cancer can be reduced in Kansas as well as the
related cost for cancer care. |
