The Breast Cancer Research program directed by Carol Fabian, M.D. works to develop effective chemopreventative agents for breast cancer. Several basic scientists have no been added to this program to explore molecular mechanisms of carcinorgenisis and breast cancer cell signaling and transduction, the overall goal being to elucidate new targets for breast cancer prevention. In addition, KMCRI has established a statewide program to offer participation for women throughout Kansas in the STAR trial sponsored by NCI through NSABP. Cancer Prevention and Control, and Population Sciences Cancer control research, directed by Jasjit S. Ahluwalia, M.D. M.P.H., M.S., is the conduct of basic and applied research in the behavioral, social, and population sciences that, independently or in combination with biomedical approaches, reduces cancer risk, incidence, morbidity, and mortality. Prevention research is directed at healthy populations, including those at high risk and/or those with detectable precancerous lesions, and cancer survivors. Intervention research in this area is based on a foundation of strong basic, clinical, and epidemiologic research. Experimental Therapeutics Program Cancer research scientists at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the University of Kansas, Lawrence Campus, and Kansas State University are actively pursuing the discovery of novel anticancer agents, preventive drugs, tumor imaging agents, and their clinical evaluation in cancer patients to restore their health and to prevent cancer in the population. Gunda Georg, Ph.D, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at KU-Lawrence, directs the program.
