Working from Home: KUMC Faculty and Staff

Introduction

To work from home, you will need a computer with a broadband (cable, DSL, or satellite) connection.  See   http://www2.kumc.edu/ir/operationalprotocols/personal_pc_standards.asp for standards to consider when buying a computer.  Generally, any new computer you purchase from a major manufacturer will be satisfactory for working from home.  KUMC supports access from off-campus for home computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.  Many of the tools and services listed below are available to Mac users as well but only limited support is available.

Access to many resources requires a web browser.  Please note that KUMC supports Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 for access to KUMC web resources.  Other browsers may work but we cannot assure they will work for all resources at all times.

If you need help accessing any KUMC resource from home, call KUMC (University) Customer Support at (913) 588-7995.

Please note that University policy prohibits accessing University sensitive information, including Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personal Identity Information (PII), from home (non-university) computers. If you need to work on sensitive information from home, the best solution is to take a university-issued encrypted laptop home with you.  Alternatively, please see “Access your office computer from your home computer” below.  For more information regarding sensitive information, see http://www2.kumc.edu/ir/operationalprotocols/sensitiveinformation.asp.
