"Internet" SSID Wireless Information

 

How secure is the KUMC wireless network?

There is no extra encryption provided on the "Internet" wireless network.  You should rely on application encryption such as HTTPS. All University resources that require you to provide a username and password (such as   webmail.kumc.edu and my.kumc.edu)utilize HTTPS technology.

The intent of the "Internet" wireless network is to provide faculty, staff, students and guests quick access to the internet and publicly available resources. Information Resources strongly encourages all faculty, staff and students to utilize the secure wireless network called "kumc-secure". How do I connect to the "Internet" wireless network?

  1. Visit a location on the KUMC campus that has wireless coverage and connect to the wireless network you choose. There are 2 wireless networks to choose from. "Internet" and "kumc-secure". The "kumc-secure" network requires some additional set-up. The instructions can be found here. (coming soon)
  2. When the "Internet" wireless network is detected by your wireless device, simply select it from the network window and wait for the connection to be made.

What can I access using the "Internet" wireless network?

As a general rule, the "Internet" wireless network will provide access only to those University resources that you can access from home via the Internet. This list is not meant to be a complete list, but a listing of the most commonly used applications.

What do I need to connect to the wireless network?

Below are the MINIMUM requirements to connect to the wireless network:

  • A Windows XP (minimum service pack 2) or an Apple computer running OS10.2 or higher.
  • A computer with an 802.11G wireless network card. Most new laptops come with wireless networking built in, but there is also a list of known compatible wireless cards available.
  • Any Web browser that supports 128-bit encryption. Most up-to-date browsers do, but specifically Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Netscape 6.0 or higher, and Safari 1.0 or higher are compatible.
  • Anti-virus software with a current virus database (also known as DAT files or virus signature files).

How much does it cost to get connected to wireless?

Provided you already have a wireless card, there is no charge to access the wireless network.
