"KUMC-Secure" Wireless Information

Information Resources strongly encourages all faculty, staff and students to utilize the secure wireless network .

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A WINDOWS VISTA OPERATING SYSTEM THERE IS A BUG THAT WILL PREVENT YOU FROM CONNECTING TO THE SECURE WIRELESS NETWORK. MICROSOFT IS AWARE OF THIS AND THE FIX HAS BEEN INCLUDED IN SERVICE PACK 1 (SP1). SERVICE PACK 1 FOR VISTA HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, BUT EXPECT IT TO BE RELEASED SOON. UNTIL THAT TIME YOU CAN UTILIZE THE UNSECURE WIRELESS.

Below are the MINIMUM requirements to connect to the wireless network:

  • A PC running Windows XP (minimum service pack 2) or an Apple computer running OS10.2 or higher.
  • A computer with an 802.11G wireless network card.  Most new laptops come with wireless networking built in, but there is also a list of known compatible wireless cards available.  Your wireless card must support WPA or WPA2 encryption technologies. Windows XP service pack 2 and Vista (Service pack 1) support WPA and WPA2. NOTE: Service Pack 1 for Vista has not been released yet.
  • Any Web browser that supports 128-bit encryption. Most up-to-date browsers do, but specifically Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Netscape 6.0 or higher, and Safari 1.0, Firefox 1.02 or higher are compatible.
  • Anti-virus software with a current virus database (also known as DAT files or virus signature files)
