How to Remotely Control your Office Computer from Home

Below are the requirements for doing a remote connection from home:

  1. You must have access to the Internet at home.  A dial-up or broadband connection will work, but performance on a dial-up connection is very slow and is not recommended.
  2. You must have University VPN access.  If you have already requested and been approved for University VPN access, skip to step 3.  Note:  Hospital VPN access is not sufficient.
    1. You can sign up for University VPN access at myKUMC (http://my.kumc.edu).
    2. Select the “SERVICES” tab.
    3. Click on the link “VPN Client Request Form”
    4. Fill out the form to request University VPN access.
    5. If you will also need hospital access, you must print out the Word document after you hit submit, fill out the form, and FAX it to the number on the form.
    6. It can take 24 hours to be approved for University VPN access.
  1. You must know the name of your computer at work and configure it to accept remote connections.
    1. Right click on the “my computer” icon.
      1. The icon will probably be on your desktop.
      2. If it is not on your desktop, select the START button on the bottom left corner of your screen and then it should be in the list.
      3. Using a shortcut “my computer shortcut icon” icon will not work.  It must be the true icon.
    2. Select “Properties”
    3. Select the “Computer Name” tab.
    4. The “Full Computer Name” is your computer name.  It will look something like computername.KUMC.EDU. You only need to remember “computername”.
    5. Write down the computer’s name.  Only the part before “.KUMC.EDU” is important.
    6. Select the “Remote” tab.
    7. Select the “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” check box if it is blank.
    8. Close the all windows.
  2. If your computer at home has Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, skip this step.
    1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80111f21-d48d-426e-96c2-08aa2bd23a49&DisplayLang=en and download the “Remote Desktop Client”.
    2. Install the client that was just downloaded.

When you are ready to establish a remote connection, follow these steps:

  1. VERY IMPORTANT – Your computer at work must be turned on.
  2. Connect to the internet.
  3. Open an Internet browser and  go to: https://vpn.kumc.edu
  4. It will ask for your username and password.  Use your Novell network username and password.  That is the same username and password that is used to logon to your computer at work.
  5. Hit the “OK” button.
  6. If you were successful, there will be an icon icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  7. Select the “START” menu, then “Programs”, then “Accessories”, then “Communications”, and finally “Remote Desktop Connection”. (This step can vary a bit from computer to computer depending on your settings).
  8. Type in the”computername” that you wrote down earlier and select the OK button.

  9. You should have a Novell desktop logon screen.  You are now on your desktop at work and just like at work, you must log on to the workstation.  Log on and start working.
  10. Remote control provides printer redirection, which routes print jobs from the computer at work to a printer attached to your computer at home. When you log on to your work computer, it detects the home computer’s printer and automatically installs the appropriate printer driver. If the home printer requires a driver that does not ship with Windows XP Professional, the printer at home will not work.

Please note that University policy prohibits accessing University sensitive information, including Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personal Identity Information (PII), from home (non-university) computers. If you need to work on sensitive information from home, the best solution is to take a university-issued encrypted laptop home with you.  Alternatively, please see “Access your office computer from your home computer” below.  For more re sensitive information, see http://www2.kumc.edu/ir/operationalprotocols/sensitiveinformation.asp
  11. When you are done, select START – LOG OFF.  Do not just close the window.
