Completed Tactics for Internet Development

  • Devise and implement process for removing extraneous material from all web devices accessible from the public network 
    Status:  completed March 2006
  • Provide organizational units with a content publishing system to use in conjunction with the new templates
    Status:  completed in February 2006; Contribute is now being used
  • Web site templates that reflect the KU visual identity standard will be made available for departmental use in February 2006
    Status:  completed
  • Redesign KUMC web site to greater emphasize prospective student, research, and patient care by Summer 2005
    Status: completed; revised with new visual identity February 2006
  • Enable online, real-time credit card transactions
    Status: Migrating all credit card systems to Paymenttech system (4/03). First client in production with credit card system (12/01). Several more are now up and running. We will continue developing custom forms as needed for various departments (2/03).
  • Launched a redesigned KUMC web site in September 2002.
  • Evaluate project and programming methodologies, incorporate Rapid Applications Development staff into development group
    Status: Using unified work track system (07/01/02)
  • Increase support of student resources and activities on the WWW
    Status:
    - Student Services site redesigned by Ed. Tech (10/00)
    - Virtual Classroom redesigned (10/00)
    - Student Virtual Center launched (10/00)
  • Install intrusion detection software on all networked computers running UNIX OSs by December 31, 1999.
    Status: Complete. Installed on core IR UNIX machines December 6, 1999; ID's NT servers completed February 2000. Still testing Win2000 version of software
  • Create a WWW-based project management tool
    Status: Completed (11/00). Tool integrated with ID's intranet site. Potential for broader application across KUMC.
  • Develop alternate means of accessing KUMC web site
    Status: Designing text-only top-level navigation to KUMC web sites that will be ADA compliant and PDA accessible. Will launch in Jan. 2001 as part of new state web design guidelines. See Web Accessibility site for more information.
  • Serve KUMC's WWW presence from a database to improve system organization and performance.
    Status: Complete. New redesign uses Informix database.
  • Re-architect KUMC's WWW presence ("Pulse"), emphasizing its use as a communication tool as well as an information tool.
    Status: Complete. New redesign incorporates a photo and news article that is managed by University Relations and the Hospital Marketing.
  • Hire additional staff to meet development burden.
    Status: completed in Apri1 2000. Two staff hired.
  • Identify high profile KUMC sites that are not maintained or need assistance, offer our services
    Status: On-going process. School of Medicine web site redesign is complete (11/00); Student Services site redesigned by Ed Tech (10/00); new Student Virtual Center launched (10/00); Virtual Classroom redesigned (10/00); School of Nursing launched (12/01)
  • Publicize new development philosophy to departments; make them aware that ID is transitioning from 'showing' to 'doing' model.
    Status: On-going process. Redesigned Web Development Resource Guide (summer 2000) to emphasize consulting services.
  • Increase support of student resources and activities on the WWW.
  • Redesign existing student resources with professional look and improve information architecture.
    Status: Redesigned Virtual Classroom and Student Services site (10/00).
  • Create new student resources site to centralize information.
    Status: Created new Virtual Student Center site (10/00).
  • Schedule regular meetings with student representatives.
    Status: Met with representatives from student government twice; met with student services staff; discussed online student resources with associate deans of schools.
  • Work with Administrative Services on web-enabling PeopleSoft student admin modules, integrate student-related tasks into larger KUMC web site.
    Status: To be discussed mid-2001.
  • Make code modifications to umbrella KUMC web site. Possibly create text-only version of pages generated out of Informix.
    Status: Mostly completed (2/01). Exploring generating text-only pages out of Informix.
  • Create KUMC web accessibility policy to ensure endorsement from executive level.
    Status: Completed.
  • Create web site detailing compliance issues and timelines; highlight ID's services for assisting.
    Status: Complete. See http://www.kumc.edu/webdev/access/
  • Hold brown bag session to introduce KUMC web developers to guidelines, outline services ID offers.
    Status: Completed. Held early February.
  • Identify high-traffic departmental sites and assist those developers with compliance issues.
    Status: To be done in March-April time frame.
  • Improve reliability of KUMC web infrastructure
    Goal: Assure that web server resources administrated by Internet Development are available to all resource users in excess of 99.9% of the time.
  • Build a Windows OS application server for hosting commercial and homegrown web-based applications such as WebBoard and Schedule-all.
    Status: apps.kumc.edu came up late summer 2000.
  • Build a Solaris-based application server to host commercial applications such as the search engine and mailing list software.
    Status: Completed early 2000.
  • Build a Windows 2000-based server to host Microsoft Access and SQL Server databases.
    Status: Completed summer 2000.
  • Create a load-balanced Windows OS and UNIX servers for delivering primary html, jsp, and asp files.
    Status: Primary responsiblity for fault-tolerant systems has been moved to Network Development.
  • Install RAID 5 level redundancy in all server data drives; mirror system drives of all server drives.
    Status: RAID 5 on data drives completed summer 2000.
  • Confidential information to use 128-bit encrypted using Secure Socket Layers to connect between client and server.
    Status: Completed.
  • Work with network security officer to develop best practices in securing confidential information on servers and databases.
    Status: In-progress.
