The Department of Medicine is committed to advancing medical knowledge and quality of care through basic, translational and clinical research. During the past year the Department has experienced growth in it's research enterprise: annual research funding, which includes grants and clinical trials is approximately $7.5 million.
Congratulations are in order for new FY08 NIH sponsored awards to Drs. Fabian, Petroff, and Gibson totaling $2,409,088 over the coming 2-5 years. Dr. Ammar Almehmi, a Nephrology fellow previously funded by an NIH-sponsored T32 Training Grant, has recently been awarded a National Kidney Foundation Research Fellowship Grant for Fiscal Year 2009 to study “Cardiovascular Burden in Uremia: the Interplay between Toll-Like Receptor and Vitamin D Receptor.”
The Department is developing mechanisms and identifying funds for support of fellows and residents in initiating and completing research projects. Although research funding is under stress nationally, opportunities remain and the Department is committed to expansion of this important endeavor.
This multi-disciplinary research center's work promotes the health of the public by generating the knowledge required to prevent disease and its consequences. Through patient-oriented research, the CORE evaluates the application of laboratory discoveries as well as the adoption of best practices in clinical settings and populations.
