Reading Elective – General Information for Residents
- Designate a faculty mentor for the month. Contact this person and make sure they are willing to work with you and evaluate you at the end of the block.
- Choose a topic and come up with a reading list. Your list should include at least 8-10 articles and 1-2 book chapters.
- Plan a final project for your block. Some options include:
- Prepare a 30 minute talk on your topic to be delivered at a noon conference to the residents. The chief residents will help you schedule this
- Prepare a 5-7 page review article on your topic. You can consider working with your mentor to have this published.
- Update the Angel board review website in your topic area. Provide some links to key articles in that subject. Dr. Aroop Pal can help you with this project.
- Prepare one or two powerpoint lectures geared to third-year medical students based on your area of study for the Residents as Teachers project (see chief residents for more information)
- You can come up with your own final project if you like subject to approval.
- An option unique to graduating seniors is the ABIM Reading Elective. Please see form for specific details.
- Prepare an elective proposal with your mentor, goals for the elective, reading list, and final project. Send this proposal to Dr. Becky Lowry at blowry@kumc.edu at least 3 months prior to your scheduled elective time.
Please contact either Dr. Lowry or the chief residents with any questions about your reading elective month. Plan on continuing your continuity clinic during your reading elective.
