Diagnostic radiology, though not routinely scheduled as a formal rotation for internal medicine residents in the University of Kansas Medical Center IM Residency may be a valuable addition to training. Depending on the resident’s goals (i.e. Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship training) improved proficiency in reading roentograms, in particular may be especially beneficial.

A resident may choose to set up an elective in diagnostic radiology as one of their 3 allotted elective rotations at either KU Medical Center or the Kansas City VA Medical Center. At KU, residents are required to submit an application to the KU Department of Radiology IN ADDITION to our standard Elective Rotation Application.

KU Dept. of Radiology Procedure for Submitting Requests:

All requests must be submitted at least 6 months prior to the rotation requested dates.
All requests must be submitted in writing using the provided Department of Radiology Clinical Observer Request Form.
The request form requires the signature of the clinical observer and the chair/program
director of the observer’s department.
The form must be submitted to the Radiology Program Coordinator, who will verify the information and review the request with regard to the existing scheduled trainees/observers in the Department for the requested time period.
The Radiology Program Coordinator will submit the request to the Program Director/Director of Radiology and the appropriate Section Head for the area(s) requested for written approval.
The Radiology Program Coordinator will send a letter of approval to the observer’s department along with appropriate paperwork required by Graduate Medical Education.
At the completion of the observation, the designated Section Head will provide the
evaluation for the clinical observer.

In circumstances in which a resident is unable to be accommodated at KU (i.e. elective in the first few months of the academic year; unavailable spots in the requested time frame, etc.), a Diagnostic Radiology elective may also be set up at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Please contact the chief residents at least 3 months prior to your scheduled elective time to arrange.
