The University of Kansas Medical Center, Section of Palliative Care
in the Department of Internal Medicine offers a one year Palliative
Medicine fellowship program with accreditation currently pending through
the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This
program, when completed successfully, provides board eligibility in
Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The University has been closely
affiliated with Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care in the creation
and ongoing operation of our fellowship program, offering a strong
combination of experiences from the Intensive Care unit to the home
hospice setting.
Clinical experiences and didactic teaching focus strongly on patient
care and medical knowledge to promote the highest level of skill in
whole person patient and family centered care, symptom management,
complex inter-personal communication, and leadership of interdisciplinary
teams. Fellows spend time on a tertiary care inpatient adult
Palliative Care consult service, a pediatric consultation service,
an inpatient hospice unit, and as well they do both home and nursing
home hospice visits. Fellows see patients in a Palliative Care
continuity clinic, and as well as they have the opportunity to rotate
through other subspecialty clinics with faculty who specialize in
Palliative Care.
A portion of time is spent on electives, which can include radiation therapy, interventional pain management, oncology, integrative medicine, or a research elective opportunity. All fellows are expected to participate in and complete a quality improvement project under the supervision of the Medical Director for Palliative Care.
