Research in my laboratory is focused on understanding the pathogenesis of HIV-associated end stage diseases particularly cardio-pulmonary disorders. The complications associated with AIDS in the ART era are evolving away from those of an infectious nature and towards noninfectious consequences of prolonged survival. HIV-related pulmonary hypertension (HIV-PAH) is a particularly severe example and the majority of HIV-PAH occurs in individuals with a history of intravenous drug use. One of my primary research efforts is aimed at understanding mechanistically how HIV-1 and drugs of abuse contribute alone and in concert to the vascular dysfunction associated with PAH.  Other focus of the lab is to unravel the interplay of macrophages, cytokines and chemokines in lung infections associated with HIV-infection and cigarette smoking.

Current research is aimed at:

  • elucidating the underlying molecular mechanism(s) involved in the augmentation of HIV-protein related pulmonary smooth muscle hyperplasia in the presence of illicit drugs.
    • explore the role of  growth factors and  extracellular matrix proteins.
    • determine the involvement of anti-proliferative bone morphogenetic protein receptor (BMPR) axis.
  • defining the mechanistic pathway(s) responsible for tight junction disassembly that results in augmentation of HIV- related pulmonary endothelial dysfunction.
