Specialty
My areas of teaching interest include the pathobiology and treatment of benign and malignant hematological disorders.
Clinical Interests
In the clinical arena, my primary areas of research interest are in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials evaluating new chemotherapeutic agents and their combinations in hematological malignancies that are most relevant to Veterans, such as Myelodysplastic syndrome, Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Currently active projects are as follows:
  • Title: Study of Doxil, Thalidomide and Dexamethasone in previously untreated patients with Multiple Myeloma Source: Ortho Biotech Role: Principal Investigator at KCVAMC Goals: Investigator initiated trial conducted in collaboration with Dr. Delva Deauna-Limayo, MD, to evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity of the above treatment combination in patients with Multiple Myeloma
  • Title: A Phase II Study of MGCD-0103 in Patients with Refractory Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Source: Methylgene
Research Interests
  • Signal transduction pathways involving nuclear receptors
  • Role of Protein kinase C and MAP kinase pathways in malignant cells
  • Study the role of Wnt signaling pathway in Barrett’s Esophageal Adenocarcinoma  development  My earlier work involved the study of deregulated Protein Kinase C isoforms and MAP kinases in  leukemogenesis and their impact on nuclear receptors and gene transcription factors. Currently, my basic  research focus is to study the role played by ß-catenin and its signaling partners in the evolution of Barrett’s  Esophagus–induced Esophageal Adenocarcinoma. This research project is funded by the Department of  Veteran Affairs Merit Review Grant.
