The Division of Dermatology includes physicians and scientists dedicated
to understanding and treating diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. These
range from common conditions such as acne and rosacea to potentially
deadly skin cancers and blistering disorders.
In addition to treating patients and conducting original research,
the faculty is involved in education. The Division has a well-established
dermatology
residency program that attracts outstanding applicants
from all over the country. The Division also provides training
to medical students and residents from other specialties. Faculty
members lecture at local and national dermatology meetings.
The division has been successful in basic and clinical research. During
the past few years KU Dermatology faculty have published more than 30
peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from RNA transcription patterns
in cutaneous lymphoma to cosmetic correction of cleft-palate. Current
research efforts focus on caloric-restriction and anti-oxidant supplementation
in aging mice, a novel Ncb5or mouse model for lipoatrophy and hyperkeratosis,
expression profiling of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and aging in
photo-exposed and photo-protected skin. Funding has come from
the Dermatology Foundation, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery,
the Noah Worcester Society, and from generous private donors.
