Cardiovascular Diseases

The Division of Cardiovascular Diseases within the Department of Internal Medicine is committed to excellence in teaching, academic medical and scientific research. We strive to continually improve the quality of teaching and clinical education of medical students, residents, and fellows and to further KUMC’s and KUSOM’s reputation for comprehensive, high-quality cardiology patient care.

In just a few short years, the cardiology program has expanded with the addition of new faculty, an increase in patient volume and the construction of a new cardiology patient facility.  In 2001, the Mid-America Cardiology Associates, Inc., (MAC) and MidAmerica Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons, Inc. (MATCS) groups joined the KU faculty and the University of Kansas Hospital medical staff, increasing cardiology related faculty to 32 members.  Accordingly, the cardiology program has seen rapid growth in patient volume and procedures.

A new $77-million, seven-level Center for Advanced Heart Care opened in 2006. The 239,000 square foot center provides advanced cardiovascular care in a state-of-the-art facility for both inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and treatment.  Medical students, house staff and cardiology fellows will have the opportunity to learn from a group of well-trained and innovative cardiologists in a 21st century medical environment.

James L. Vacek, MD, FACC, FACP, FAHA has been appointed as Director of Cardiovascular Research.  This has markedly increased scholarly activities.  He brings an organized addition to the Cardiovascular Fellowship program and will provide a clinical cardiovascular research foundation for CV fellows during their experience.
