Course Description:

A study of disorders of the auditory system including anatomical,  physiological, perceptual, and audiological manifestations of pathologies affecting hearing.

Course Objectives:      The purpose of this course is to enable the student to acquire knowledge and understanding of disorders of the auditory system, including anatomical, physiological, perceptual and audiological manifestations of pathologies affecting hearing (and balance).  Particular attention will be paid to patient symptoms, choosing appropriate tests, appropriate interpretation of symptoms and test results, and medical referral and follow-up.
Course Format:

Lecture + discussion in seminar format

Information and understanding will be gained through readings, lectures, discussions, demonstration, clinical practice, attendance at medical grand rounds/lectures, observation of surgery, and reviewing articles from medical as well as audiological journals.  Lecture/discussions will take place during scheduled class sessions on Monday afternoons.  Appropriate material from practicum meeting on Mondays at noon may also be considered a part of this class.  And, occasional demonstrations may take place in the Audiology Clinic.  Depending on the number of students enrolled in the class, these demonstrations may take place in one of two sessions before or after lecture time.

Paper:  One of the above presentations shall be written in the form of a research paper.  You may choose from any of your four assigned topics, or another topic approved by instructor.

The paper will be evaluated as follows:
80%   Content:  accurate, appropriate citations, current, complete, integration with other course material.
20%   Style:  logical organization, clear presentation, concise; grammar, spelling, punctuation; APA style for references.

Medical orientation assignments: 

Complete 2 of the following over the course of the semester:
1.  Observation of ear surgery.
2.  Participation in Cleft Palate clinic, including the staffing which follows.
3.  Attendance at medical grand rounds or lectures, including review a recent article on the particular topic. Cite article in report; bring a copy of it to class.

Report the above, as follows:
