PNEUMONIA: CLINICAL MANAGEMENT (CONT’D)

• Antibiotic therapy

  • Consider EES or EES/Sulfa if < 4-6 mos
  • 6 mos - 5 yrs: Use beta-lactamase resistant antibiotic x 10 days
  • Over 5 yrs: Use macrolide antibiotic x 10 days
  • May use tetracycline if > 8 yrs.
  • Empiric treatment usually in adults/elderly
