I. Refer to the following questions as you complete readings in Friedman. Discuss any difficulties you encountered or questions of special interest in your clinical conference discussion of .

Chapter One

  1. Review and compare the various definitions provided in chapter one for "family". Using an abbreviated concept analysis approach, propose at least 3 defining criteria for the concept of family.
  2. How does the meaning of family health differ from the meaning of health?
  3. Why is it important for nurses to be familiar with traditional and variant family forms?

Chapter Two

  1. List the four levels of family nursing practice discussed in Friedman. What factor appears to differentiate the four levels of practice?
  2. What two specialty areas of nursing have incorporated "the family as client" into their ANA standards of practice?
  3. Why is health promotion considered a primary thrust of family nursing?

Chapter Three

1. What differences exist between the nursing process in working with families versus working with individual client systems?

Chapter Four and Five

Refer to study questions at the end of chapters four and five as you read. Compare your thoughts with the correct answers at the end of each chapter. If you were incorrect in thoughts/responses go back and review that section of the reading.

Chapter Six

Identify the developmental stage your own family is in presently. What are the major tasks of this stage, as well as the possible health concerns and needs. Do you think you are doing ok in meeting the tasks??

Refer to study questions at the end of chapter seven. Compare your thoughts/responses with the correct answers. If you were incorrect in thoughts/responses go back and review that section of the reading.

II. Refer to the following questions as you complete readings in Sampson & Marthas. Discuss any difficulties you encountered or questions of special interest in your clinical conference discussion on .

1. Reflect on all groups you are a part of. List each group with the corresponding function the group fulfills (Chapter One).

2. Apply the concepts of relevance and cohesiveness in the analysis of normative pressure/conformity to a group you are a part of.

3. Compare and contrast the major theories of group development.

4. Utilizing the systems mode of thought, provide an explanation of a group event you have witnessed. Use the "systems" concepts of input, throughput, output, and feedback to illustrate the example.
