UNIT II: ANALYSIS OF THEORY
GROUP ACTIVITIES
I. Glossary Scramble Exercise.
- Print the following list of theory related terms. Cut apart the word list into
individual terms.
- Review the terms and their meanings on your own prior to meeting in clinical conference
on October 11, 2001. Arrange the terms in order from lowest to highest level of abstraction
using the readings on scope of theory and glossary in Chinn & Kramer, as
well as the Fawcett chapter in Unit 1. Keep in
mind that some terms are often used interchangeably and thus some terms will be on the
same level of abstraction. Further, different authors define terms differently. Do not
become frustrated. The activity is to raise your awareness about the terminology and apply
what you have learned thus far.
- Review the hierarchy listings in your clinical conference. Attempt to come to consensus
on the rankings using the readings to support your contentions.
- The facilitator should e-mail the ordered list to me for comment.
- VARIABLE
- CONCEPT
- EMPIRICAL INDICATOR
- CONSTRUCT
- HYPOTHESIS
- METAPARADIGM OF NURSING

II. DISCUSSION OF UNIT 2 INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY
Review and discuss any difficulties or questions/comments on study questions and
terminology from Unit 2. Also discuss the Orem theory critique (PowerPoint presentation).
Last, discuss the critique of the Cooley et al. theory analysis article. Since we do not
have the classroom setting for lecture and discussion, this interaction and discussion
during your time together in clinical conference is very important. This type of activity
facilitates divergent and critical thinking, very important elements of graduate
education. As usual let me know your thoughts in the conference log (e-mail).
