Dr. Mattioli received his medical degree from the University of Perugia Medical School in 1956. He continued his education at Perugia Medical School and completed a pediatric residency in 1958.
In 1960 he began his training in the US with internship, pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship both in Philadelphia and at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is Board Certified both in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Mattioli joined the University of Kansas Medical Center in July,1968, and received full professorship in April, 1978.
He served as the Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit from 1975-1980 and was Director of Pediatric Cardiology from 1978-1994. Dr. Mattioli has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the American College of Cardiology and a member of Midwest Society for Pediatric Research, American Thoracic Society, and Sigma XI Club.
He has been recognized for his teaching efforts by receiving several awards and honors throughout the years, including the recent Kemper Teaching Award of Excellence in 1998.
In 1991 he and Dr. Robert Cox, a practicing pediatrician in Hays Kansas, began using telecommunication technology for long distance consultations, giving the University of Kansas credit for being in the forefront of the development of pediatric telecardiology.

Dr. Mattioli serves as pediatric cardiology telemedicine consultant for the State.
