Film: Pioneers & Visionaries - The First 100 Years of the University of Kansas School of Medicine

On April 21, 1905, the University of Kansas School of Medicine was established by the Kansas Board of Regents. In celebration of that event we would like to share the film, “Pioneers and Visionaries”, which highlights our major accomplishments over the past 100 years.

Human Resources

Presentation includes distribution and completion of required orientation forms. Employees are provided information on the following Personnel Regulations and Policies: Paydays, Paychecks & Deductions, Kansas Civil Service System, Performance Evaluations, Appeals & Grievances, Overtime, Sick Leave & Vacations, Memorandums of Agreement, Unemployment Compensation, Lifeline, Salary Increases, Smoking Policy, Work Place Violence Policy, Attendance Policy, Whistleblower’s Act, Drug-Free Workplace Policy. Information is also given regarding paid jury duty, funeral leave for immediate family, military leave and tuition assistance. 913-588-5159

Occupational Health and Environmental Medicine/Employee Health

New employees are required to make an appointment to be seen in the Occupational Health Clinic and are provided a sign-up sheet for that purpose. Records of immunizations are reviewed and, if indicated, immunizations are provided for employees. Worker’s Compensation benefits are reviewed and employees provided with a copy of “job related injuries/illnesses policy.” Staff includes an occupational medicine physician, occupational health nurses and a worker’s compensation case manager to ensure appropriate care and treatment. 913-588-6512

Risk Management

Information is presented on the following topics:

  • Goals of risk management - to reduce frequency and severity of loss while improving the quality of patient care
  • Importance of incident reporting which is required by the JCAHO and State of Kansas
  • Description of Kansas Risk Management Law applicable to all hospitals in the State of Kansas
  • Tips on prevention of claims and lawsuits including the importance of patient relations and good documentation

Presenter distributes handouts which contain a summary of the oral presentation, a contact number for the risk manager, and an example of a completed "Confidential Incident Report." 913-588-7281

Benefits

A Benefits Orientation is held from 9:55 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. during Medical Center New Employee Orientation. All new employees and employees newly eligible for benefits are encouraged to attend to hear an explanation of the benefits available and the enrollment forms needed. There is also an opportunity to ask questions. 913-588-5087

Lunch and Welcome from the Vice Chancellor for Administration

Lunch and Welcome from the Vice Chancellor for Administration –Employees who are attending the full day Orientation will be guests of the Executive Vice Chancellor for lunch in the University Room. New employees will be welcomed to the Medical Center and presented an overview of the Medical Center’s mission, vision, accomplishments and goals for the future. 913-588-1400

Parking Services

A member of the Parking services staff reviews information contained in the "Parking Policies and Procedures" brochure. Topics include: provisions for student, faculty, employee, and staff parking, general regulations, parking areas for patients, visitors, and special restricted areas, and permit fees for surface and garage parking lots. Brochure contains detailed information on these topics, plus a color-coded map of the employee permit parking areas, and the location and contact number for Parking. 913-588-5175

Information Resources

This presentation provides new employees with a description of the services the department offers which include computer software training classes, and GroupWise E-mail classes. In addition, employees are given information about KUMC's website, E-Mail policy, Guide to Technology at KUMC, and IR Customer Support Services. 913-588-8655

Kirmayer Fitness Service

An overview of the services offered to employees is provided including location, hours of operation, membership application and fees, and the benefits of joining the fitness center. 913-588-7701

University Police

A representative of the Medical Center Police Department presents an overview of the services available to all employees including KUMC's after hours escort service, 911 emergency service, and the purpose and locations of the blue phones. Handouts are distributed to employees which contain detailed printed information on services offered by Medical Center police. 913-588-5030

Payroll

New employees, whose first day of work is on the scheduled orientation day, complete paperwork necessary for payroll sign-in. 913-588-5100

Employment Office/ID Badges

New employees must complete paperwork necessary to comply with federal I-9 requirements. When the paperwork is completed, employees will have their pictures taken for employee ID badges. 913-588-5086.
