Departmental Orientation Recommendations


In addition to the Medical Center Orientation, departments/supervisors are responsible for providing a departmental orientation for their new employees. This should be scheduled during the employee's first week on the job and may include the following topics:

  • Department's mission, services and goals
  • Internal and external customers
  • Position description and performance expectations
  • Training opportunities and resources
  • All departmental policies and procedures including safety information (e.g., location of fire alarms and extinguishers, evacuation route, location of Material Safety Data Sheets)
  • Work schedule, lunch and rest breaks - overtime if applicable
  • Instructions for completion of departmental and medical center forms (e.g., purchase orders, vouchers, vacation requests)
  • Time clock/timesheets (e.g., location and how to operate/complete)
  • Uniforms/I.D. badges
  • Review KUMC attendance policy with attention given to point system, and the department's policy/procedure for notification of absence due to illness
  • Communication and confidentiality issues
  • Telephones (e.g., operation, greeting, routing, frequently used numbers)
  • E-mail and Internet use
  • Office organization (files, supplies, etc.)
  • Office resources (e.g., directories, dictionaries, computer program manuals, staff listing)
