A group of students, faculty, and staff are joining with Good Natured Family Farms to start a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) on campus. Purchasing a subscription for the 2012 season (late May through September) offers you, and your family, a bag of local, seasonal, organic food to be picked up on campus each Tuesday (May 29 - Sept 25). The variety of fresh vegetables, fruit, bread, and animal products (pasture-raised meat, dairy, and eggs) come from over 160 farms within a 200 mile radius of Kansas City vary each week. Among other benefits, joining a CSA is a great way to try new foods, eat healthfully, and help the environment. Questions may be directed to FoodIsMedicine@kumc.edu.

The MU College of Veterinary Medicine is proud of their exciting center based on the growing field of research showing how the human-animal bond impacts health in people and animals.

Integrative Medicine is a "healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind and spirit) including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative." This presentation includes a general overview of the background and history of integrative medicine and how it examines the interplay between biology, behavior, psychosocial factors and the environment.

Dr. Vernon is the Medical Director of the University of Kansas Weight Control Program, an Atkins Nutritional Consultant, and has a Private Practice in Northeast Kansas. She is also the co-author (with Jacqueline Eberstein, RN) of "Atkins Diabetes Revolution" (Harper-Collins, 2004). Dr. Vernon will discuss issues relating to carbohydrate restricted diets, diabetes, weight management, hormonal impacts, as well as energy and fitness levels. Dr. Vandegeest-Wallace is a full-time psychologist in the Counseling and Education Support Services department. She has presented to university students and community members on subjects including stress management, conflict resolution, communication skills, team building and diversity. Back by popular demand are Psychogeometrics (The Art & Science of Communication) where Dr. Vandegeest-Wallace will identify common, predictable conflicts that occur between personality styles and develop strategies for managing those conflicts effectively.

Join us for a discussion on the current state of the environment and how society's old ways of viewing the world and how success is measured are no longer acceptable. In order for us to survive as a species, a new wordview is necessary--one that combines those of ancient indigenous cultures with those of the modern world. The old egocentric way of looking at the world as being there for our use and abuse is no longer acceptable. A new world view is emerging that honors indigenous cultures' understanding of oneness with creation while maintaining the best elements of western ideals of success. Mike will then discuss a number of practical, "how to" actions that people can make in their lives to significantly reduce their carbon footprint on the earth.
