Resume Tips
- Place your name at the top of the page on a line by
itself. Your name can also be the first text on following pages.
- Use standard address format below your name.
- List each phone number on its own line (i.e., home,
work, school, cellular, fax)
- Use common headings such as: Objective,
Experience, Employment, Skills, Summary of Qualifications,
Accomplishments, Education, Affiliations, Licenses, Certifications,
References, etc.
- Use boldface and/or all capital letters
for section headings, as long as the letters don't touch each other.
- Do not include information such as: Social
Security Number, Height, Weight, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Gender, Health Status, Ethnicity/Race,
Religion, Children, or Marital Status.
- Do not include lengthy information such as:
Dissertations, Research Papers (unless applying for a Research Position)
or lists of publications.
- Use standard fonts such as Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif, Times Roman, and a font size of 11 to 14 points. Avoid uncommon and colored fonts.
- Avoid formats such as italics, underline,
shadowing-effects, lines, graphics, boxes and columns or newspaper
effects.
- Proofread your resume for spelling and
grammatical errors, punctuation, etc.
- Spell out unusual acronyms.
- Above all, be truthful and honest.
Special Note
You may want to have two versions of your resume:
- Electronically - Most of the above tips cover electronic resumes as well.
- For your interviewer - Include your
creative layout, enhanced typography and summarized information.
Carry this one to the interview with you.
