Resume Do's and Don'ts


Do...

  • use common fonts, especially for your name.
  • spell out unusual acronyms
  • proofread your resume
  • list any languages you speak
  • include email addresses, but 1) don't use your current workplace, or 2) unprofessional email addresses. Ex: boredtotears@kc.rr.com , myfuzzybear@gmail.com
  • use common headings such as: Objective, Experience, Employment, Skills, Summary of Qualifications, Accomplishments, Education, Affiliations, Licenses, Certifications, etc.
  • be truthful and honest.

Don't...

  • include personal information such as: SSN, Height, Weight, DOB, Place of Birth, Health Status, Gender, Ethnicity/Race, Religion, Children, Marital Status
  • use colored fonts or pictures on your resume
  • include information that could be perceived as controversial, such as: religion, church affiliations, or political affiliations.
  • include "continued on next page" or "references furnished by request"
  • list Typing Speed, unless the job description asks for a certain speed.
  • block your text on the right. This puts odd spacing between words to right justify which makes it harder to read.
  • include lengthy information such as: Dissertations, Research Papers (unless applying for a Research Position) or lists of publications.

Special Note - What to bring with you

A notebook or file folder for:

  • Copies of your cover letter
  • Copies of your resume
  • A copy of your long application (if applicable)
  • Questions you may have
  • Small notepad for note taking
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Copies of your Business References
