KUMC Interviews Hinge on the Details
There's no doubt about it: When interviewing for a job, you have to be
both a showman and a salesman. But in your rush to say and do all the right
things, you may be overlooking details that cost you the job.
- Bring with you to the interview a copy of your cover letter, your resume, and a list of references (usually three).
- Know the name of who you're seeing and how to pronounce it when arriving
for an interview. Ask the receptionist if you don't know.
- Being late for an interview counts against you. Arrive at least
10-15 minutes early if at all possible. This shows that you really
want the job. Practice the route the day before so you
know how to get
there.
- Call the Employment Office at 913-588-5086 if you don't know
where to park or
need
directions.
- Concentrate on maintaining good eye contact. One of the problems with
looking away is that sometimes you turn your head and the interviewer can't
hear you.
- Watch out for odors or habits that distract the interviewer from what you're
saying. Wearing too much cologne, flashy clothes or big earrings are some
examples. If you subconsciously twist your hair or bounce your feet because
you're nervous, that's all the interviewer will remember about you.
- During the interview, don't ask about salary or benefits unless the job is
being offered to you. The best time to talk about compensation is after the
job has been offered.
- Turn off pagers and cell phones.
