The Express Station

The Express Station, located in Room 2044 Wescoe Pavilion, is a private place for women to express breast milk for their babies. It is available to faculty, staff, medical residents and students of the Hospital, KUMC and KUPI.

  1. Policy
    • The room has a sink, comfortable chair, a blue security phone and a door that locks for privacy. The room is available for women to use during their work or lunch breaks, or before or after work.
    • A Medela Lactina double electric breast pump has been provided through the support of the KUMC Auxiliary. This breast pump is a hospital grade double electric pump. There are instructions for pump use in the room as well as in the breast pump tubing kits that are necessary to use the pump.
  2. Procedure
    • Each person using the room should be responsible for leaving the room tidy for the next.
    • Women are responsible for labeling and storing their breast milk. Containers for breast milk are not provided.
    • Infection Control requires that milk being stored in a KUMC refrigerator be placed in a plastic bag just like any other body fluid.
    • If special assistance related to maintaining milk supply or breastfeeding is needed, contact the Lactation Team members at ext. 80115 or the outpatient Pediatric Lactation Clinic at ext. 85908. You may also email questions to Sallie Page-Goertz RN,PNP, IBCLC or Jenny Walters. The breast feeding help line is 913-588-5640.
  3. Pumping Equipment and Supplies
    • Women may use their personal breast pumps in The Express Station. Women may also use the Medela Lactina electric pump located in the room.
    • Women will need to purchase their own breast pump tubing attachments to use with the Lactina pump. The required parts for double or single pumping are included in the "Universal Pumping System" or "Lactina Double Pumping Kit" manufactured by Medela. No other accessories will work with the Lactina pump.
    • Accessories needed to use the Medela Lactina pumps are available through a number of local outlets. Call Medela at 1-800-TELLYOU or access the intranet at www.medela.com for the closest outlet. Arrangements can be made for direct shipment of these accessories to you.
    • Women who deliver at The University of Kansas Hospital may obtain a breast pump tubing kit that is compatible for use with the Medela Lactina breast pump found in The Express Station. Please let your nurse know that you have this need prior to hospital discharge. Currently, there is no mechanism for purchasing the kit as an out-patient.
