Logging in a sample
Station 1: Intake
Specimens are received in the lab and entered into a laboratory
information system. A cytogenetic medical record is generated
with a unique accession number in order to document and track
the specimen through the lab.
Where are Chromosomes?
All body cells that have a nucleus contain chromosomes. Typically
cells are gathered from white blood cells found in blood. Skin
samples, amnionic fluid, chronic villus samples and bond marrow
are other sources for cells.
