Class of 2009

A Bean Alicia Bean, MD
Medical School: University of Kansas Medical School
Undergraduate School: Kansas State University

I am originally from a tiny town in North Central Kansas, Luray, and have moved eastward throughout my training.  I plan to practice somewhere back home.  I really enjoy women’s health and adolescent medicine.  In my spare time, I love just being a Mom, swimming and reading with my children.  I also love cross-stitching, hiking, and horse back riding.  Family medicine is my favorite specialty because I am able to work with patients and families across their lifespan, from the cradle to the rocking chair.

J Kirby Jamie Kirby, MD
Chief Resident 2008-2009
Medical School: Texas A & M Health Science Center College of Medicine
Undergraduate School: Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas

I like to do a little bit of everything. I've climbed 10 fourteen thousand foot mountains in Colorado. I'm a new snowboarder and love it! In the flat state of Kansas, I enjoy running with my westie, Lulu, and working out with my hubby Jake. Jake will start dental school at UMKC in the fall of 2008. My parents are originally from Kansas and retired here, but I grew up an army brat and lived in 11 places before starting college! My favorite places to live were Texas (of course!) and Heidelberg, Germany. After finishing residency, I plan to move wherever my husband finds work :) -- which will be in Texas! Hobbies I enjoy while in residency include exercise, wining and dining, traveling on vacations, and spending time with my family. My areas of interest within family medicine are adolescent medicine and women's health.
T Mitchell Thomas Mitchell, MD

Prior to staring college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do with my life.  I did not attend college right out of high school.  When I did, I sought a profession that would allow me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people in my community.  My decision to become a physician was solidified when I became an EMT during my junior year in college.  The combination of being able to aid people in a time of need along in an intellectually stimulating career seemed ideal for me.  Initially I decided on general surgery and completed two years of surgical residency in Westchester, New York.  My decision to switch to family medicine was due to a variety of professional and social issues suffice it to say that I am much happier now in family medicine.  I am even more satisfied with the decision to come to University of Kansas Medical Center.  The variety of pathology that only a university medical center can provide has given me the confidence to face any clinical problem I will encounter once I finish.  Also, the extensive amount of elective time in the third year was a significant part of my decision to train at KUMC.  Dr. Vail is extremely supportive of the residents and is always searching for new and inventive ways to improve a program that is already rich with diverse educational opportunities.  My wife and I have enjoyed living in Kansas City as well.  We have been impressed with the ideal combination a cosmopolitan major league city with a strong economic base, at the same time offering an affordable cost of living with a small town feel.  We have been so impressed that we have bought a house in Olathe, KS a suburb of Kansas City and have decided to make our home here.

J Owens Jay Owens, DO
D Tran Don Tran, MD
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine
Undergraduate School: University of California at Irvine
Hometown: Orange County, CA

The road to becoming a physician has been a long and arduous journey. Originally from Vietnam, I came to the United States in 1975 and have been living the American dream ever since. Growing up in a large family, I was the first in my family to become a doctor. I chose family medicine because this profession allows me to help the entire community, from the young to the old and everyone in between. We are able to treat a variety of illnesses and not be limited by a specific specialty. After completing my family medicine residency, I plan on returning to California where I have lived for the past 30 years. My area of interest is adolescent and adult medicine.

When not practicing medicine, I love spending time with my wife, Trini, and my two kids, Catherine and Nicholas. I also enjoy watching movies, reading the news, and surfing the web.

D Thomas Denny Thomas, MD
Medical School: Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College,Karnataka,India

I hail from the South of India, the state is called Kerala.  After finishing medical school in India, I got married and came to the US to join my husband.  I chose Family Medicine because of the variety of patient population -- newborn to the elderly.  I knew I would be constantly challenged every minute of the day and that opens doors to learning new things constantly -- never boring!  Choosing Kansas City was not a difficult choice since I had lived here for 5 yrs prior to joining KUMC in 2006 for my residency training and knew this was a great place to live with the added benefit of a good program.  I spend my spare time either shopping at the mall, cooking at home or playing with my three year old daughter.  My areas of interest within family medicine include adolescent medicine and women's health.  After residency, I would like to join a practice where I have outpatient clinic duties as well as inpatient responsibilities.
J Zaudke Jana Zaudke, MA, MD
Chief Resident 2008-2009
Medical School: University of Kansas Medical School
Undergraduate School: Kansas State University
Hometown: Wichita, KS

My path has taken me here to KU's Family Medicine department, but it has not been a direct path, that's for sure! Before medical school, I tried out a number of things: English professor, bookstore manager, marketing assistant, CNA at a nursing home, Hospice volunteer. At the age of 34, I entered medical school in search of a profession that would allow me to take care of people in a meaningful fashion. Family Medicine, of course, was a perfect match for me! Now that I have found my home, my hope is to continue to work wtihin an academic institution, with special interest in Residency education and Geriatrics/Palliative care.

Outside of the medical institution, I spend as much time in nature as possible. I am a gardener, and an animal lover. Our property has recently qualified as a Certified Wildlife Habitat, and I spend as much time as residency allows working in my yard, caring for the plants and animals who call my yard home.

T Zufer Tahira Zufer, MD
Medical School: King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan
Undergraduate School: Kinnaird College, Lahore, Pakistan

Born and raised in Pakistan, I moved to the US in 1997, with my husband and daughter. I have lived in Detroit, MI and Naperville, IL (for my husband’s job). We moved to Kansas 7 years ago, and have loved it ever since.

Why Family Medicine? Love the diversity and challenge of learning something new all the time, yet still have the opportunity to focus on something that I like doing more of, and that for me would be Adult Medicine.  I like the concept of being a "Jack Of All Trades", and the more I do it, the more I like it.
In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family (husband and 2 kids) and friends, watching movies, dining out and playing ‘POKER’.  I, along with my husband, kids and some friends, have also been learning how to ski for the last 3 years, and love it. And of course sleeping: anytime and anywhere.
After finishing my residency, I would like to stay in Kansas, in primary care, with focus on adult medicine and women’s health.
