Program Sites

Our residency program offers three different options for program sites.

University of Kansas Hospital - Kansas City

KU Med West - Lenexa

Residents complete the same training as the Kansas City residents except their outpatient family practice clinics are at KU Med West instead of KUMC. KU Med West is a freestanding ambulatory care facility located in suburban Lenexa Kansas (~15 minutes from KUMC). KU Med West residents enjoy the best of both worlds as they train in both in an urban academic institution and a suburban outpatient care center. Currently 2 residents are accepted per year.

Junction City

Located approximately 2 hours west of Kansas City, Geary Community Hospital is a 92-bed, non-for-profit hospital that cares for over 1,800 inpatients and 58,000 outpatient each year. The Junction City Family Practice Center located in the Medical Arts Building sees approximately 6,200 patients annually. Residents spend their first 12 months training with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Under the direction of Ron Mace, MD, second and third year residents then participate in an integrated 24-month semi-longitudinal family practice experience which includes surgery, medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, dermatology, orthopedic surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology.

The University of Kansas Family Practice Residency-Junction City Rural Track is the last rural residency of its type in Kansas. It combines the same high quality instruction and education available on the Kansas City campus with a full-spectrum of real-life rural family medicine. It's ideally suited for physicians considering a rural practice. The Junction City program was originally a longitudinal experience, but has evolved into a rotational experiences in all of the major areas of family practice. The residents will gain experiences in medicine , surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine, dermatology, obstetrics, and gynecology. There are also electives available in cardiology, urology, pulmonary medicine, nephrology, and other allied specialties. These experiences are all integrated into the 24 months experience in Junction City. Residents will learn to independently manage the total care of their patients in their own clinic and in the hospital setting. They will learn the details of managing a medical practice and discover the exciting variety of pathology and complex illnesses that are present in the rural environment. Currently we accept one resident per year for this program.
