Scholarly Research Project
The University of Kansas Medical Center is one
of the most prominent research institutions in the mid-west. Last
year, KUMC was awarded $68,760,318 in total funding. The department
of Family Medicine is no different with a full complement of research
physicians focusing on original clinical research, resident education,
and predoctoral education.
As part of being affiliated with the department
of Family Medicine, each resident is required to complete an original
research project that is of publishable quality upon graduation of
the program. First-year residents are paired with a family practice
research faculty (mentor) who works with the resident for the entire
three years. The mentor will work side by side to choose a research
question that best suits your individual interests and will work with
you to develop a methodology, obtain approval from the human subjects
committee, and draft a final manuscript. Additional faculty and staff
are also available to assist with tools for literature search/review,
data collection, data analysis, PowerPoint presentation, and final
manuscript submission and publication.
Residents are only required to complete one
research project, but are certainly encouraged to participate in further
research during their residency. In addition, KUMC offers a top notch
Masters in Public Health (MPH)
for those graduates interested in careers in research.
