Since its inception in 1972, our family medicine residency program has graduated over 350 physicians, many of whom are now practicing in a variety of clinical settings throughout the country (Recent Graduates). Being a university-based program allows our residents to care for a diverse patient population that is derived from the Kansas City Metroplex as well as the rural towns of Kansas. The university setting offers each resident the opportunity to make independent decisions regarding patient care issues, to interact with other residents and renowned faculty in their fields, and to participate in the education of medical and allied health students. Where else but in a university setting can one truly practice the mantra of: "see one, do one, teach one".
Training in a university medical center is only one aspect. Given the breadth and scope of family medicine, our program offers a diverse curriculum that exemplifies the philosophy and mission of our specialty. Each resident rotates through a number of hospitals and clinical settings in order to provide healthcare to the rural, suburban, underserved, and urban populations. The scope of family practice is truly realized when one can experience the joys of providing healthcare to such a diverse patient population.
Our program also provides residents with the opportunity to tailor their residency to their individual interests and future practice needs. A resident who is interested in rural medicine may rotate with one of our graduates in rural Kansas and spend time honing their obstetric skills and their comfort level with trauma situations. Another resident who is interested in orthopedics may spend more time rotating with local orthopedists and serving as a team physician for local sports teams. The flexibility of the residency allows a resident to learn the skills that will make them the physicians they want to be.
We teach and nurture our residents to be competent physicians and leaders in the communities they will serve.
For the 2007-2008 academic year, we will be accepting 10 total residents - 7 residents for KUMC Main Campus, 2 for Lenexa, and 1 for Junction City. Each site has its own individual match number, however, all ERAS applications are received at their site: www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm.
