History of Family Medicine Research at KU Medical Center

In 1995, the School of Medicine was awarded a $15 million grant from the Kansas Health Foundation to launch its Primary Care Physician Education (PCPE) project, a five-year statewide initiative to enhance the School's ability to meet the primary care needs of the state, and of the nation. One product of the project has been the rise in primary care education and research at the School of Medicine. The Department of Family Medicine (KUFM) has benefited from this initiative, and through its intramural and extramural partnerships, the Department's research enterprise has grown in recent years to place it in the top quartile nationally in family medicine departments for research funding. A research unit was formed in July 2000 to further advance KUFM's research mission and increase its scholarly productivity. The investigation of social and behavioral determinants of health, illness, and well-being are focal areas for the researchers in the unit. In October 2000, a Family Medicine Research Symposium was inaugurated to provide a forum for faculty and residents to present their research and other scholarly activity.
