Shelley Bhattacharya, DO MPHSHELLEY BHATTACHARYA, DO MPH
Assistant Professor

Dr. Bhattacharya joined as new faculty in August of 2005. She came from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She completed her medical school training at the Oklahoma State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed her residency in Family Medicine at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She also obtained a Master's in Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. Her interests include public health, health system improvement and elder driving safety.

Dr. Bhattacharya was born in London, England and has lived in three countries. Her hobbies include swimming, running, gardening, playing the piano, practicing francais...and traveling! She is married to a great cook!

Dr. Bonaminio is the Associate Dean for Medical Education and the Director of the Office of Medical Education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She has responsibility for oversight of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses, the standardized patient program, the statewide medical education network program, the evaluation of courses and the curriculum, and medical education research.

Dr. Chumley joined the department in August 2004 as the Director of Predoctoral Education. She is involved locally and nationally with medical education as the chair of the Education Council and an appointed member of the Alliance for Clinical Education and the STFM Education Committee. Her academic interests are in medical student clinical skills development and the use of technology in medical education.

Deborah Clements, MDDEB CLEMENTS, MD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Clements is the Associate Program Director for the KU Family Medicine Residency Program and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at KU. Prior to her position at KU, she was the Assistant Director of Medical Education for the American Academy of Family Physicians while maintaining a clinical practice in family medicine. Additionally, she served as a core faculty member of the AAFP Chief Resident Leadership Development Program. She has published numerous articles in medical education research and has contributed to several family medicine textbooks and lectures internationally on a variety of clinical topics. In addition to her activities with the AAFP, Dr. Clements completed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Secretary's Primary Health Care Policy Fellowship with an emphasis on the effects of bioterrorism on mental health. She has served as a liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and the Robert Wood Johnson America's Health Together initiative developed to help clinicians understand the psychiatric needs of their patients in today's environment.

Dr. Clements completed her family medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, where she also received her medical degree. She is board certified in family medicine and was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2002. As a resident, she served as a delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates and was the Resident Member of the AAFP Board of Directors. She is currently co-chair of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians Education Committee and serves as a member of the KAFP Board of Directors. Dr. Clements is extensively involved in physician leadership development and frequently conducts workshops and presentations, both in the US and internationally, for medical schools and professional medical organizations across the country.

John Delzell, MDJOHN DELZELL, MD
Associate Chair for Education

Dr. Delzell is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine (1993). He completed an internship and residency in Family Practice at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1996. He is Board certified in Family Medicine (1996, recertification in 2002). He was a faculty member and the Assistant Residency Director at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1996 to 2001. He received a Master's of Science in Public Health in 2000. From 2001 until this year he was the Program Director for the University of Tennessee / Saint Francis Family Medicine Residency Program in Memphis Tennessee.

Diane Ebbert, ARNPDIANE EBBERT, ARNP
Assistant Professor

Diane Ebbert is a certified family nurse practitioner with joint appointments as a clinical assistant professor in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. Diane is a member of the core faculty for the student clinic in the 3rd year clerkship in Family Medicine. In addition, she preceptors Family Nurse Practitioner students and teaches in their clinical courses. Diane's clinical interests include diabetes and women's health. She is a PhD candidate majoring in Nursing with a minor in Health Policy. Her dissertation is a study of the chronically uninsured in Kansas. Other research interests include vulnerable populations, access to care and competency in health care profession students. Diane is committed to community outreach and volunteers many hours for several community organizations in activities such as screening physicals and health education.

 

Patricia Fitzgibbons, MDPATRICIA FITZGIBBONS, MD, Assistant Professor

Dr. Fitzgibbons graduated summa cum laude from St. Louis University with a major in Philosophy and three minors (History, Theology, and English). She received her medical degree from the University of Nebraska, where she also completed her family medicine residency: She has worked in both private practice and residency programs, in both university and community hospital settings in Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She brings a wealth of experience in practice, in practice management, and in teaching.

Dr. Freeman serves as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Chief of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Hospital. He is also a Board member of the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, the REACH Healthcare Foundation, and Physicians for Reproductive Health and Choice, for which he serves also on the national strategic planning committee and Residency Education Initiative board. He served as Chair of the Steering Committee for Curricular Change (2003-05), and is an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council. He was a Fulbright Scholar in São Paulo, Brazil in 2003, and consults there frequently on establishment of family medicine in that country.

Dr. Greiner serves as Medical Director / Health Officer for the Health Department of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, KS. He is a member for the Board of Directors of the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, the Duschene Clinic, and Southwest Boulevard Family Care. He is faculty co-advisor for the JayDoc Free Clinic, and for the medical school's Community Leadership track. He directs the Rural Primary Care Practice and Research Program and linked Kansas Physicians Engaged in Prevention Research (KPEPR) Network, is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Health Disparities Scholar and was a 2004 Kemper Fellowship Award winner.

KennedyMICHAEL KENNEDY, MD

Dr. Kennedy was appointed the Assistant Dean for Rural Health Education in the School of Medicine last July. He is the Medical Director of the KUMC Murphy Society, and in this position he has the title Assistant Dean for Murphy Academic Society. Dr. Kennedy is also the Medical Director for Unit 43, the Family Medicine/Orthopedic Unit in University of Kansas Hospital, in which role he serves as the Family Medicine In-Patient Service Director and coordinates the Family Medicine In-Patient service. Dr. Kennedy is the Co-Course Director for the first year medical school course, Introduction to Clinical Medicine with Dr. Heidi Chumley. Most recently they were involved in the LCME site visit and are heavily involved in the transition to the new medical school curriculum that will change to a block form of education with the central theme of active learning and problem solving as the hub for medical student education. Dr. Kennedy serves as (2005) Vice President of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP). He is a third-year fellow in the Sunflower Clinical Scholars Program.

LieseBRUCE S. LIESE, PhD
Professor

Dr. Liese is a psychologist who has been working in the department for the past 22 years. He most enjoys integrating his teaching responsibilities with patient care. Students and residents observe him as he sees patients with anxiety, depression, addictions, family problems, marital problems, and more. In addition to offering individual and group psychotherapy, Dr. Liese supervises advanced Ph.D. psychology students who offer free psychological services in the department. He functions in a leadership role by chairing Family Medicine's P&T Committee. He offers his psychological expertise and services to support the residency program by participating on committees, in discussion groups, and through program development. In addition, he offers his research expertise by teaching monthly resident research seminars and supervising individual residents on their projects.

 

LisbonELEANOR LISBON, MD

In addition to her clinical practice and teaching, Dr. Lisbon is a third-year fellow in the Sunflower Clinical Scholars Program (SCSP) in the Research Track, and is a participant in the Kansas Clinical Research Curriculum Program, an NIH funded K30 Research Training program. She will complete her MPH degree in the fall of 2006. Her work has focused on clinical competency, adolescent medicine and public health interventions. In 2003, she was awarded a Center of Excellence for Minority Education Faculty Development grant, and successfully obtained the KU Institutional Review Board's approval to study adolescents' attitudes about parenthood, and I began working with a community-based intervention program addressing health promotion and disease prevention in the area of adolescent risk behavior and HIV/AIDS prevention. Her research interests include the prevalence, attitudes and knowledge about paternity among community dwelling males and the socio-cultural and psychosocial determinants of adolescent risk behavior and specifically those that place minority female adolescents at risk for HIV/AIDS. She has begun two other pilot projects, including a survey of Medical school faculty behavior regarding prescriptions for emergency contraception and "Health Bridge", a project of the Department of Telemedicine that provides health education to pregnant teens in Wyandotte County. In September of 2005, she attended the AAMC/Harvard School of Medicine Minority Faculty Development Seminar.

Mary McDonald, MDMARY McDONALD, MD

Dr. McDonald became a faculty member in July, 2004, after completing her residency program at KUMC, where she served as a Chief Resident during her last year, and a Geriatrics Fellowship. Dr. McDonald's focus is Geriatrics, and her responsibilities include seeing older adult patients in the Landon Center on Aging's Geriatrics Clinic, nursing homes, home care and hospice. She also has a prominent role in the Landon Center on Aging education program involving medical students, resident physicians, geriatric medicine fellows, community-based physicians and other health care professionals. Her interest is in the care of older adults in the outpatient and long-term care settings, including physician-patient communication, end-of-life care, and long-term care medicine.

 

Mark Meyer, MDMARK MEYER, MD

Dr. Meyer serves the medical school as Associate Dean for Student Affairs. In this role, he has major influence on the academic and non-academic aspects of student life on the campus. He has recently played a major role in the LCME site visit, and his office received special commendation from the LCME site visitors. He is also in Director of all the Academic Society, and is personally the Director of the Delp Society. He is, or has been, advisor for a large number of student organizations, including the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG). A former residency director, Dr. Meyer maintains a very busy and active clinical practice and teaches in the family medicine clinic, inpatient service, and maternity service.

 

Donald Milligan, MDDONALD MILLIGAN, MD

Dr. Milligan was in private practice in Olathe, Kansas before joining the faculty at KUMC. He is chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee and a member of the antibiotic subcommittee, the palliative care team of the medical center, and has research interests in physician prescribing behavior and outpatient drug use.

 

 

PetersonMOYA PETERSON, ARNP
Assistant Professor

Ms. Peterson is certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner. She teaches in the graduate school of Nursing in the Family Nurse Practitioner program and practices in the clinical area and teaches third year medical students in the Family Medicine clinical rotation, as well as precepting high school students in the Health Professions class in the FM clinic. She is a massage therapist and adds that unique quality to her practice. She has completed her class work and written and oral comprehensive examinations and is now a doctoral candidate in the PhD in Nursing program at KU; dissertation topic: dissertation that is entitled "A Naturalistic study and video essay of adults with Down Syndrome and their families."

Dr. Redmon, in addition to active clinical practice and teaching in the Family Medicine Clinic, sees patients at the Landon Center on Aging. She also serves as quality of care reviewer for the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Belinda Vail, MDBELINDA VAIL, MD

Dr. Vail serves as both Vice-Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Residency Director for the Family Medicine Residency Program. She has a very busy clinical practice, including maternity care and inpatient care, and teaches residents and students in all these settings. She is Medical Director for both Community Living Opportunities, a residential facility for developmentally disabled adults, and SACEK, the Substance Abuse Center of Eastern Kansas. She teaches extensively in the medical school curriculum, in ICM-Clinical Skills, Pathology correlations, and the Family Medicine clerkship. In CME, she is the Director of the Kansas City Board Review Course sponsored by the AAFP, and lectures extensively at a variety of programs around the country. Dr. Vail received the Rainbow Award from the Class of 2003, and the Nason Family Award for Excellence in Teaching in Family Medicine in 2005.

Dr. Sullivan is an educator-turned-physician. She was in private practice in south Kansas City for many years working with medical students and residents rotating through the office. Her practice was acquired by Jayhawk Primary Care (part of the KU Hospital) system about seven years ago. She recently moved to KUMedWest to be closer to home and have an opportunity to be more involved in teaching residents.

Dr. Sullivan has served as Director of Medical Education at Lakeside Hospital, is former president of the Jackson County Osteopathic Medical Association and currently serving on the executive committee of that organization. She received Medallion Award in April from Missouri association of Osteopathic Physicians for outstanding service to the medical community. She is past chair of the Dept. of Family Medicine at St. Joseph Medical Center, and is currently serving on Medical Advisory Committee for BCBS and Credentials Committee for Coventry Insurance. She is Board-Certified by the Osteopathic Board of Family Practice.

Ron Mace, MDRON MACE, MD

Dr. Mace is a native Kansas who grew up and was trained in Oklahoma. He returned to Kansas in 1975 and has practiced in Junction City ever since. Dr. Mace has a strong interest in training and retaining family physicians in rural Kansas communities. He was involved in the KU preceptor program for 20 years, which led to his effort in the develop-ment of the rural track in Junction City.

Dr. Mace is married to Andrea and has a physician daughter, Rhonda (who is associated with his practice) and has beautiful twin granddaughters. His interests include spending time with his granddaughters, trap shooting, and water sports.
