At the KU Family Medicine Clinic we provide high quality, complete health care for all the members of your family, from newborns to senior citizens. We look at the whole person, considering all aspects of your life when treating your illness or helping you stay healthy. Our physicians and nurse practitioners can effectively treat most health care problems you and your family may experience. If you should require more specialized care, we can refer you to one of our highly-qualified KUMC specialists.

Since we are a training center for medical and nurse-practitioner students, at times you may be asked to allow a supervised student to participate in your medical care. In addition, we operate a residency training program in our Family Medicine Center. Residents are licensed physicians training to be specialists in Family Medicine. They see their own patients under faculty supervision in our offices for the three years of their graduate training. When you work with these trainees, you have the advantage of two medical minds contributing to your care as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you have added to the education of future health care professionals.

Making an appointment

When you call for an appointment we will either schedule a planned appointment in the near future or we can see you within 1 business day of your call if needed.

  • Most office visits are scheduled for 15 minutes. Physicals are usually 30 minutes.
  • Clearly explain the purpose of your visit in order that sufficient time may be scheduled.
  • Please call ahead to schedule routine care.
  • For urgent care, call as early in the day as possible.
  • If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can see other patients.

When you schedule an appointment, we'll need to know some basic information:

  • Your name, current address and telephone numbers
  • Your birth date
  • Health insurance information
  • Your primary care physician or nurse practitioner's name
  • Specific information about why you need to see a clinician so we can schedule the appropriate amount of time.

Please be sure to bring your health insurance identification card with you when you come for your appointment. You should examine your card to see if your insurance requires you to pay a "per visit co-payment" which is usually $5, $10, or $20. Co-payments must be paid at the time of your visit, and must be paid in cash or by credit card.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to complete the check-in process. If you are more than 15 minutes late for your scheduled appointment you may need to wait until others are seen first. You will also be given the option of rescheduling your appointment to another time or day.

Urgent care

If you have an unexpected need to see your physician, please call the office before you come in. It is best to call as early in the day as possible. We will make every possible attempt to see you.

If your regular doctor is not available, we will schedule you with another physician in the office. Calling the office prior to coming in will reduce your waiting time and prevent exposure to other's illnesses.

If you are in need of medical care at night, on weekends, or on holidays, please call our regular office number, (913) 588-1908. Your call will be taken by an operator who will have our doctor-on-call return your call as soon as possible.

Prescription refills

When you are running low on prescription drugs you take regularly , please first check your drug container. If the label says that you still have a refills left on the prescription, call your pharmacy directly; you do not need another prescription from your physician. If the label says you have "0" or "No" refills left, you should make plans well in advance of running out of your medication to get a refill.

  • If you have an appointment soon, be sure to request your refills then.
  • Call at least 2 days in advance. This allows your chart to be pulled and reviewed by your physician.
  • Refills are usually addressed within 48 hours.
  • Indicate your pharmacy name and phone number.
  • Indicate your name, date of birth, and your phone number.
  • Indicate the name of your medicine(s) and the strength.
  • Routine refills may be requested through your pharmacy.
  • Refills are not made during the weekends or evenings.
  • An appointment may be necessary, especially if you have not been seen in the past 6-12 months.
