Deborah Clements, MD

Professor and KUFM Residency Program Director

Dr. Clements is the Residency Director for the Family Medicine Residency Program and a Professor of Family Medicine at KU. Prior to her position at KU, she was the Assistant Director of Medical Education for the American Academy of Family Physicians while maintaining a clinical practice in family medicine. Additionally, she served as a core faculty member of the AAFP Chief Resident Leadership Development Program. She has published numerous articles in medical education research and has contributed to several family medicine textbooks and lectures internationally on a variety of clinical topics. In addition to her activities with the AAFP, Dr. Clements completed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Secretary's Primary Health Care Policy Fellowship with an emphasis on the effects of bioterrorism on mental health. She has served as a liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and the Robert Wood Johnson America's Health Together initiative developed to help clinicians understand the psychiatric needs of their patients in today's environment.

Dr. Clements completed her family medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, where she also received her medical degree. She is board certified in family medicine and was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2002. As a resident, she served as a delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates and was the Resident Member of the AAFP Board of Directors. She is currently co-chair of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians Education Committee and serves as a member of the KAFP Board of Directors. Dr. Clements is extensively involved in physician leadership development and frequently conducts workshops and presentations, both in the US and internationally, for medical schools and professional medical organizations across the country.
