Jan Kozma received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She then taught at the University of Kentucky and Florida International University before coming to KU in 1977. She chaired the Department of French and Italian from 1987 to 1995. She currently is a Professor of Italian. Caroline Jewers, Assistant Professor of French, states "she has a long and consistent record of scholarship, and has published numerous books and articles on Italian literature. her current work focuses on a much-overlooked Italian female author whose novels are distinctly proto-feminist at a time when Fascist Italy repressed such political and cultural ideals." Her published articles appear in highly respected journals. Her work covers all aspects of the profession, but always communicates a deep wish to disseminate her love of Italian literature and culture and make it accessible. Elizabeth Schultz, Professor of English, says "her writing and research is known and respected as penetrating and provocative.
Her scholarly excellences have merited her a Knightship in the Order of Merit in the Italian Republic. Keeping principles of justice and standards of excellence always to the fore, she strengthened her own department and guided others." Roberta Johnson, Professor of Spanish, says of our inductee: "Her talent as a teacher and curricular designer is also abundantly evident in the fine Italian program she built from scratch at KU." In addition, she designed and directed the summer language institute in Florence, Italy, which has received rave reviews from participants. Dr. Kozma's teaching was recognized with a Mortar Board Outstanding Educator Award in 1990 and the Cramer Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research from the Department of French in 1992. Linda Stone-Ferrier, Professor of Art History, states "students praise this teacher for presenting course material with stimulating analysis." In addition to being an excellent mentor and role model for her students, she has conscientiously devoted her attention to the new women professors who have joined her department and has successfully monitored two of them through the tenure process.
