Biography

Helen Martin Gilles, Pediatrician, was a pioneer for women in medicine in the state of Kansas.  Beginning in 1948, she worked in a private pediatric practice for 35 years.  After that, she worked part time from 1983 to 1997 for the Indian Health Service.

Dr. Gilles was also an excellent leader for the community of Lawrence.  She also served on the Lawrence Board of Education for eight years.
