Pediatric Vitamins With Iron Drops
Vitamins with Iron Drops are now available in the KUMC Pharmacy. Historically, KUMC Pharmacy has stocked only liquid vitamin drops without iron and dispensed vitamin and iron drops separately both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. This system requires two medications for administration to an infant. While this is not a problem on a inpatient basis it would be easier for families to administer only one medication and could improve patient compliance.
The iron content must be carefully considered when ordering, especially in the neonate population. Each 1 ml dose contains 10 mg of elemental iron [equivalent to 50 mg of ferrous sulfate]. The only other difference (besides the iron) between these products is the Vitamins without Iron Drops also contain Vitamin B-12. Care must also be taken to specify with or without iron in the orders for these drops. Note: none of these products supplies folic acid.
