Applicants will be
asked to describe their research experience, career
interests
and plans in writing. Each applicant will be sponsored by
a departmental chair
or authorized representative who will address
the applicant’s research potential
and describe a plan to offer
adequate protected time for training. Novice trainees
must be
guaranteed blocks of
two months each summer and a minimum of three
months total in their
first year and nine months in their second year for research
apprenticeships and weekly time for class and seminar. No applicant
without
adequate departmental commitment will be accepted.
Each applicant will
describe plans for salary sources for two
years via GME, partial clinical revenue
as an instructor and/or
training grant stipends. Transitional trainees with career
development funding will describe their plans for further research
training, their
need for more formal coursework and a commitment to
participate in the seminar
series. Applications will be reviewed for
completeness by the executive
committee.

Candidate
selection will be a function of the Internal Advisory Committee.
The
Committee will prioritize applications based on potential for a
career in
patient oriented research, departmental commitment and
mentor qualifications.
They will recommend the top five novice
applicants for awards. Transitional
candidates who meet all criteria
for participation will be accepted.
Our
goal is accept a minimum of 5 novice and 5 transitional trainees
annually.
We will be able to accommodate a large number of
additional trainees who
would like to participate in the coursework
and seminars. Our only restriction
on the number of awardees is in
the novice
program where
we are limited to
five enrollees annually due to limited funds for
tuition support and small grants
for research costs during
apprenticeships.
