Analysis and Programming

Mission

To provide application programming, analysis, and support for the development, maintenance, and problem resolution of Administrative, and Academic computer systems. Such systems utilize PeopleSoft Code/Tools, and Oracle databases and reside on client/servers, networks, and stand alone personal computers, located at KUMC in Kansas City.

What languages are used for development?

PeopleSoft Code/Tools

ANALYSIS & PROGRAMMING
Application programming supports Administrative systems. Development languages are PeopleSoft (Code/Tools). The use of vendor systems enables the development and implementation of systems in a timely manner with far greater accuracy and efficiency.

ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS
Major Administrative PeopleSoft systems include Payroll (Payroll/Time, Budget, and Labor), Human Resources (Position Management, Personnel Administration, Base Benefits), Financials ( Accts Receivable/Billing, Asset Management, Purchasing Payables, General Ledger, Inventory, Budget, Asset Management), Student Administration (Campus Community, Recruitment/Admissions, Academic Advisement, Financial Aid, Student Financials).

Applications with automated interface systems into the PeopleSoft Financials system, include: Telephone Billing, Information Resources Billing, Biotechnology, MicroCore Facility, Facilities, Lab Animal Research, Payroll, STARS, and Student Billing.

Tools/Methods/Languages

PeopleTools -
An advanced application development environment used to develop, implement, customize, maintain PeopleSoft Vendor applications. Designed for structured Query Language (SQL), to Build/modify application panels/pull-down menus, to build/add/change data fields or new tables, regulate/control security.

Relational Databases -
A database/database management system that stores information in tables-rows and columns of data-and conducts searches by using data in specified columns of one table to find additional data in another table. Rows of a table represent records and columns represent fields. The combination of data from two tables creates a third table of the requested data. KU utilizes both Huron & Oracle relational databases.

PS/Query Reporting -
A report specialist provides guidance, technical support and report writing for all PeopleSoft applications.

Database Administration -
Allows common usage of data by varied institutional systems, eliminating duplication, which allows all systems to 'share' data with a common definition. Function is provided to system developers by an Administrator and Data Analysts.

Client Server -
An arrangement used on local area networks that makes use of "distributed intelligence" to treat both the server and the individual workstations as intelligent, programmable devices, thus exploiting the full computing power of each, by splitting the processing of an application between two distinct components: a "front-end" client and a "back-end" server. Client is a complete stand-alone PC (versus a "dumb" terminal.

Organizations/Activities

Extensive PeopleSoft technical/functional training for each programmer. Gartner, Burton, and PS Alliance annual conferences.
