Clock Face Drawing Task

Printable Versions of Materials needed to create station:

Guide for Preceptors:

NOTE: the information posted just below is identical to that in the printable version of the preceptor guide above.

Preparing for this task: First obtain a copy of the clock-face drawing task from any public site that provides free access to geriatric screening tools.
For example: http://www.healthcare.uiowa.edu/igec/tools/categoryMenu.asp?categoryID=1

Then print off the two sheets of clocks (click here), and laminate them if you like. They are derived from our geriatric medicine clinic. Alternatively, you might want to gather your own clock faces from your own clinic setting. We have two sets of materials available so that four students can participate at a time, working in pairs.

Facilitating this station: Students generally have not encountered the clock face drawing test before coming to their geriatric medicine rotation. We point out that this cognitive screening test is quick and easy to do in a primary care setting. We ask them to look at the instructions for the 6-point scoring system, using 11:10 as the prompted time. As a group, the students then briefly discuss each clock and what they think the score should be, with the faculty member clarifying and commenting as needed. We focus more on familiarizing the students with various common errors, such as left-right number reversals, and we focus less on the actual numeric scores so as not to get drawn into detailed scrutiny of minor discordance in scores that might come up, particularly in the mid-range.
