KUMC Occupational Health Clinic FAQs


GENERAL

Where is the Occupational Health Clinic?
It is on the ground floor of Delp in G110, directly north of the Olathe Parking Garage.

What are your clinic hours?
Our business hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except for holidays. In emergency situations, employees may be evaluated after hours, on weekends, and holidays in the Emergency Department.

What services does the Occupational Health Clinic provide?

  • New employee health evaluations and immunizations
  • Preventive medicine services, including education and counseling
  • Ability-to-work evaluations in regard to personal or work-related illness and injury.
  • Surveillance of medical conditions, for example, monitoring blood pressure.
  • Medical surveillance examinations for employees who work with toxic or hazardous materials.
  • Treatment of employees with work-related illness or injury.
  • Drug screen collection and processing.

If I get sick at work, do I report to the Occupational Health Clinic?
The Occupational Health Clinic will not evaluate employees for personal health related issues. Ability-to-Work evaluations may be requested by the employee's department for evaluation of the employee's ability to safely perform their job given the employee's current personal medical status. If an employee or their department is not sure whether a condition is work related they may be seen and evaluated in Employee Health Services, and then referred appropriately.

The Occupational Health Clinic stocks a minimal number of over-the-counter medications, mainly acetominophen and ibuprofen. Single doses of these medications are available upon request by the employee at not cost without the need for medical evaluation. Employee Health will not be responsible for assessing the appropriateness of use of these services to the employee. Additional over-the-counter medications are stocked and are for sale in the outpatient pharmacy.

SCHEDULING

What are the clinic appointment hours?
Our hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. except for holidays. In emergency situations, employees may be evaluated after hours, on weekends, and holidays in the Emergency Department.

Can I just walk in anytime?
To avoid excessive waits, please call prior to coming to the clinic, and make an appointment. However, some walk-ins can be acccomplished.

What is the latest appointment time I can get?
The latest appointment time is 4:00 p.m.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Why do I have to get a TB skin test?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires annual TB Surveillance in hospital settings. To maintain a healthy working population, KUMC has adopted a policy to annually skin test EVERY employee at the medical center.

What days can I get a TB skin test?
Any day Monday through Friday, except Thursday. Call 588-6512 for an appointment.

When does the TB skin test have to be read?
The test is to be read 48-72 hours after placement.

Why do I have to come back to the clinic to have my skin test read?
To accurately document the size of any type of reaction.

What if I've had a past positive TB Skin test?
It is still necessary to contact the Occupational Health Clinic to complete your annual questionnaire.

What immunizations do you provide, and what do they cost?
There is no cost for immunizations provided as part of employment. Immunizations provided through the clinic are Tetanus and Diptheria (TD), Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). Based upon your job duties, you may be eligible for Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox Vaccine, and Hepatitis A.

Where can I obtain copies of my past immunizations?
Baby books, parents, the health department, military shot records. previous employers, post-secondary schools, personal physician.

What immunizations are required if I'm travelling overseas?
Please consult the CDC web page at http://www.cdc.gov/travel/

WORKERS COMPENSATION

Who do I contact if I'm injured on the job?
The Occupational Health Clinic is the designated medical care provider for all KUMC employees. If you are injured while at work, notify your supervisor immediately. Call the Workers Compensation Nurse Case Manager at 588-2714 or 588-6512.

Do I have to complete any paperwork to report a work-related injury?
An 1101-A Employer's Report of Accident needs to be completed if you are a university employee. During regular business hours, the form will be completed in the Occupational Health Clinic by computer. After hours, complete the form and immediately forward the completed form to the Workers Compensation Nurse Case Manager at G110 Delp.  If you are a KUPI or Hospital, employee you must bring an authorization form with you on your initial reporting visit.

What do I do if I'm injured after Occupational Health Clinic Hours?
If immediate treatment is necessary, report to the KU Emergency Department with a completed 1101-A Employers report of accident form. All non-emergency, medical treatment and follow-up visits from the ER must be evaluated in the Occupational Health Clinic on the next working business day.

What do I do if I get a blood-borne pathogen exposure -- Needlestick?
Immediately decontaminate the area. Report the incident to your supervisor, and file an employers report of accident with employee health. If the incident occurs after normal working hours or on the weekend, then the employee shall report to Emergency Services for initial care of the wound, if needed, and report to Occupational Health for completion of the exposure evaluation. All blood borne pathogen exposure follow-up care will be conducted through the Occupational Health Clinic.

Can I see my personal physician for a work-related injury?
No!

BILLING

What services (i.e. immunizations, lab tests) do I have to pay for?
Immunizations and/or lab testing as part of employment are provided at no cost to the employee. Additional immunizations and/or lab testing can be paid for by the employee. For further information regarding these services, please contact: Barbara Strain, Business Manager, or Pam Foerster Nurse Manager.

What do I do if I recieve worker's compensation bills at home?
Bring the bill to the clinic IMMEDIATELY!

What do I do if I recieve a KUMC hospital bill for services required by the employer?
Bring the bill to the clinic immediately!
