Interview with a 2003 graduate, Teresa Ilten:

Why did you decide to return to school to get your Master of Science in Nursing degree?

I had always wanted to continue my education. It just got “put on hold” while I raised my family. I wanted to increase my knowledge base so that I could practice in an expanded role in nursing.

What was your clinical job before you started the Master’s program?

Most of my experience is in medical-surgical acute care with several positions in the education arena.

Your major tract in the Master’s program was Adult/Gerontological Health Care/Clinical Nurse Specialist. Why did you select this tract?

I felt this tract offered me a wider base of knowledge as a foundation. It also allowed me to learn more about the roles of the CNS, which are better suited to my needs and strengths.

What advice would give a nurse as far as how to balance working and continuing their education?

Just taking that first step with one course was the key for me. After I was successful with my first class, I had the confidence to continue.

Did you work full-time while pursuing your Master’s degree?

I was fortunate enough to work part-time while I pursued my Master’s. Working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the KU School of Nursing skills laboratory also helped me keep my costs down while in school.

How has your job changed since you have earned your Master’s degree?

I have been able to secure a full-time position in teaching since I completed my Master’s. The knowledge and skills that I acquired from my education have been very helpful in my current position.

Has your salary or other benefits increased as a result of your advanced degree?

My salary and benefits have both increased as a result of my continued education.
