4 leaf clover
******What Can Bring You Good Luck?******

You don’t need a 4 leaf clover for luck as a nurse if you have your BSN degree. A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing can open many doors for you and put you on the winners track. Read below how a new degree can make you “lucky” in your work.

Personal Profile

  • Name: Monica Roberts, RN
  • Professional Education: ADN from KCKCC in 2002
  • Current Position: Critical care charge nurse on an acute unit at a local hospital in Kansas City. \
  • What is the favorite part of your job?
    • I love to share new information and teach new grads. I also like to teach patients about what is happening to them and why and explain why certain medications may be ordered.
  • What was your motivation to continue your education?
    • I want to continue to grow within the nursing field, and as I age I won’t be able to continue to be a floor nurse – it’s very stressful.
  • Any challenges on returning to school?
    • I am a single mom of 2 children and most weeks I work full time with the weekend option, but I generally pick up an extra day during the week. When I started school I would have to juggle study time around my daughters’ schedule. This semester I put them in daycare because studying was becoming very difficult.
  • Do you have any words of wisdom to anyone thinking about pursing their BSN?
    • One of the things I hear nurses who have their associate degree say is that they have no reason to obtain their BSN but I beg to differ. Obtaining my BSN has truly made me grow as a person and I have become a better nurse as a result. It is important as professionals to continue to enhance our knowledge and skills through life long learning opportunities starting with a BSN.
  • What rewards/benefits do you anticipate when you have your BSN?
    • I eventually want to obtain an MHA and MBA so that I can be a CEO of a hospital or nursing facility. I feel I have a great deal to offer any hospital and am looking forward to being able to share my newfound knowledge and skills.

News in Nursing

According to US Department of Health and Human Services Division of Nursing statistics, employment among RNs will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2008. Demand for quality nurses continue to rise due to the increase in the median age of the U.S. population.
